Elsy Najera

I live with my parents and my two younger brothers. My father is an industrial mechanic. Because he works as an independent blacksmith, it is not a steady job. My mom sometimes does temporary jobs to make extra income and help my dad.

Honestly, the lack of money has been one of the things that has affected me the most throughout my life. When I was about to graduate from high school, times were tough for me due to our lack of money. I could not continue to college because I did not have enough money to cover college tuition.

For a long time I couldn’t decide what career to choose in college. I seriously thought about becoming a lawyer, but I discovered Computer Science and I loved it. It is a career where you can develop extensive skills in technology and you can pursue many different fields of work. It is also a male-dominated career, and I would like to change that and see more girls like me decide to study Computer Science. My inspiration has been many female computer coders throughout history who have not received the recognition they deserve. Recently I was inspired by the Quetzal 1 Project (the first Guatemalan satellite put into orbit on April 28) where I could see a lot of female computer science students. I want to achieve something like that one day.
